Differentiated Teaching & Learning Model
At Jells Park Primary School we are proud to offer our students a unique Teaching and Learning model which includes students working in both mixed ability and ability based learning groups. We differentiate our teaching for all our students in Literacy and Numeracy, within their Level from Foundation to Level 6.
Our Improvement Group Model is based on the “Fishbone” Model of Rob Vingerhoets, who has been a critical friend to our school.
Units of work are structured to begin with the whole class focus and investigation. Then at a point determined by the teacher, students are grouped across a level (Improvement Groups or IG’s) to work on differentiated learning.
This model allows teachers to target instruction to a student’s point of need more easily and also allows for the students to work through the curriculum at a pace that is better suited to their abilities, while still being challenged.
Our unique teaching and learning model ensures teaching groups are fluid and students are always being instructed at their zone of proximal development. It also facilitates greater student agency, allowing students to identify and examine their strengths and weaknesses within the curriculum and to create and discuss their individual learning goals with their teacher. At Jells Park Primary School we believe in ensuring that every student achieves growth academically, socially and emotionally during their schooling. Just like other developmental milestones, the rate of this growth will differ for each child.
The classrooms and the daily timetable have been structured to best cater for this model.
